Early Reading Intervention, Grades 1 and 2

See Schedule

This program is designed to extend a teacher's knowledge of metacognition and the reading process by following structured diagnostic teaching procedures. Resource room and elementary classroom teachers will gain experience working individually with children who are having difficulty learning to read. This knowledge will help teachers organize their classrooms to benefit all children. Administrators interested in exploring early intervention programs will also find this course of interest. The program is based on extensive research on early literacy development. At-risk children receive daily individual 30-minute lessons that are an extension of regular classroom instruction. This is an intensive course that requires a significant commitment of time and energy.

 Course Participants must:

*attend all workshops

*tutor a grade one student for 30 minutes every day for 13-20 weeks, depending upon the child's needs

*Maintain a daily teaching log, hand in Observation Summary, log pages, and bring log to all workshops

*Videotape one or two tutoring sessions to share and discuss with the class

*be qualified teachers or teaching assistants working with a trained Early Reading Intervention teacher
